During my recent visit to Haiti, we met with villager of Pon Batay, a small village with a big dream. They have approached Food for the Poor for help in bringing water, sanitation facilities and livable homes to their farming village. Currently residents must walk 45 minutes to the nearest fresh water well. Families live in ramshackle homes built of scrap wood, mud and rusted tin or thatched roofs.

This project will team with others bringing fresh water and sanitation facilities to the village and build a simple two room cement home with an indoor bathroom for a village family. The family will provide a small parcel of land and sweat equity in their home.

In Haiti, Food for the Poor builds duplex homes at a cost of $3200 per unit. Our initial goal will be to build one unit with the option to build additional units if funds exceed our original goal.

About Food For The Poor

Since its inception in 1982, Food For The Poor has been serving the poorest of the poor in 17 countries throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. Thanks to faithful donors, Food For The Poor's programs provide housing, clean water, education, micro-enterprise initiatives, healthcare, and emergency relief in addition to feeding hundreds of thousands of people each day.

Collectively, Food For The Poor has raised over $11 billion in aid, more than half of which was provided in the last five years, and has built more than 91,000 housing units for the destitute. The best part? Total administrative costs have remained under 5%, which means that more than 95% of all donations go directly to programs that help those in desperate need.
